At least twelve inmates have escaped from the Federal Correctional Centre in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State, following a jailbreak in the early hours of Monday.
Confirming the incident, Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, described the escape as “unfortunate” and assured residents that the state government, in collaboration with security agencies, is taking swift action to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Fanwo disclosed that one of the escapees has already been re-arrested, while security operatives are working to track down the remaining fugitives.
“The fact that the inmates reportedly escaped via the tower without damaging the structure raises serious concerns,” he stated. “This calls for a thorough investigation to determine how the escape happened, apprehend the fugitives, and identify any possible internal collaborators.”
Governor Usman Ododo has directed security forces to enhance security at correctional facilities across the state to prevent further breaches.
Fanwo also urged the public to report any suspicious individuals in their communities, warning that anyone caught harboring an escaped inmate would face legal action.
“There is no need for panic. Residents should go about their normal activities, assured that the safety of lives and property remains a top priority,” he added.
