The Federal Government has inaugurated a ministerial committee to supervise the development and distribution of a 753-unit housing estate in Abuja, recently recovered from former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, who is currently facing corruption charges.
The estate, situated in the Lokogoma area of the Federal Capital Territory, was transferred to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following a presidential directive as part of the country’s broader asset recovery efforts.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 12-member committee on Monday, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, described the task as a key part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, especially in addressing the nation’s housing deficit.
According to Dangiwa, the committee was formed in line with the president’s vision to repurpose the recovered property into habitable, secure, and affordable homes for Nigerians.
He emphasized the need for transparency and innovation, urging the members to remove all bureaucratic delays and meet deadlines.
“Nigerians are eager to see progress. They want these homes completed and allocated in a fair and open manner. This is about showing that government is responsive and accountable,” he said.
The committee is chaired by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Shuaib Belgore, and includes senior officials from the technical, engineering, procurement, finance, planning, and public relations departments.
They have been tasked with conducting an assessment of the estate’s structural integrity, evaluating the number and condition of the units, and estimating the cost of completing essential infrastructure such as roads, water, and electricity.
Other responsibilities include establishing a uniform standard for architectural finishes, creating a fair allocation framework through the Renewed Hope Housing Portal, and designing a communications strategy to foster public trust in the process.
The committee is also expected to engage relevant agencies including the EFCC, Federal Capital Territory Administration, and utility service providers.
A preliminary report is due within four weeks.
Minister of State for Housing, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, in his remarks, underscored the importance of teamwork and recommended that the committee bring in external professionals where necessary to ensure a successful outcome.
Also speaking, Belgore assured the public that the committee would discharge its responsibilities with integrity and professionalism.
He noted that the housing project represents a broader effort by the federal government to turn recovered assets into infrastructure that directly benefits citizens.
“This initiative will serve as a model for how recovered public property can be transformed into impactful projects that address real societal needs,” he said.
