JUST IN: ASUU Gets New President

Chris Piwuna

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Prof. Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, as its new president.

Piwuna, who also holds the position of Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, takes over from Prof. Victor Osodeke, a Professor of Soil Science at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

The election took place at the 23rd National Delegates Congress of the Union, held in Benin on Sunday.

Prof. Piwuna contested the position against Prof. Adamu Babayo from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, according to sources familiar with the election process.

His election comes amid concerns over potential industrial action, with ongoing debates surrounding the allocation of Earned Academic Allowances recently released by the Federal Government, along with issues related to brain drain and other sector challenges.
