Authorities have identified seven inmates who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa, Osun State, after torrential rainfall destroyed a section of the facility's perimeter wall in the early hours of Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) confirmed the incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. and was triggered by structural damage caused by the downpour.
AFRIPOST reports that the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, has ordered a thorough probe into the escape.
A statement issued by Umar Abubakar, Deputy Controller of Corrections and Public Relations Officer, provided the identities, ages, and residential addresses of the escapees:
John Michael, 34, from Emene, Enugu State
Tobi Akin, 19, residing near DC School, Oke Ejigbo, Osun State
Eze Nweze, 40, of No. 26 Ayegbajeje, Ikorodu, Lagos State
Olalekan Ajofoyinbo, 45, from Ilupeju Ekiti, Ekiti State
Ninalowo Yusuf, 28, residing at No.1 Idowu Close, Ojo, Lagos State
Mattew Ogunjimi, 20, of No. 53 Owode Street, Ikirun, Osun State
Kabiru Oyedun, 39, of No. 56 Orita Agunla, Omu, Lagos State
“To encourage public assistance, the Nigerian Correctional Service is offering a reward of N5 million to anyone who provides credible information leading to the re-arrest of the escaped inmates from Ilesa,” the statement announced.
The NCoS urged anyone with useful tips to notify the nearest security agency, promising that “all information will be handled with strict confidentiality and anonymity.”
