Expect Three Days of Thunderstorms, Rain Across Nigeria — NiMet

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted a series of thunderstorms and rainfall across various regions of the country from Sunday through Tuesday.

In its weather report released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet said early morning thunderstorms are expected on Sunday in parts of Taraba and Adamawa in the northern region. 

Later in the day, weather disturbances including rain and storms are likely in areas such as Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Kaduna, Jigawa, Borno, Gombe, and Bauchi.

For the North-Central states, a cloudy morning is anticipated. However, by afternoon and evening, rainfall and thunderstorms are expected in the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, and Plateau.

Southern states will start Sunday with a cloudy atmosphere, but NiMet predicts rainfall later in the day in places like Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, Edo, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa.

Moving into Monday, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Bauchi in the North are expected to experience morning rain and thunderstorms. 

As the day progresses, more rainfall is likely across Taraba, Adamawa, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Borno, Bauchi, and Kaduna.

In the North-Central zone, states like Niger, Kogi, the FCT, and Nasarawa could see thunderstorms in the morning, with further downpours expected in Plateau, Kwara, and Benue by afternoon.

For southern Nigeria, Monday morning rain is anticipated in Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom, with increased rainfall activity spreading across most parts of the region by evening.

By Tuesday, isolated thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are forecast for Zamfara and Kaduna during the early hours. 

More widespread storms and showers are expected later in the day across Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Bauchi, Gombe, and Borno.

Morning rain is expected over parts of Niger, Plateau, and Benue in the North-Central area, while afternoon and evening storms could affect the FCT, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, and Benue.

In the South, areas like Lagos and Bayelsa are likely to get early morning rain, followed by extended rainfall across the southern belt through the rest of the day.

NiMet advised residents to remain cautious, as gusty winds may accompany thunderstorms in some regions. 

People are encouraged to secure loose objects, stay indoors during intense rainfall, and disconnect electrical appliances to avoid hazards.

The agency also urged airline operators to obtain detailed forecasts from NiMet for safe flight planning and called on the public to stay informed through regular weather updates.
