Parent to Ondo WAEC Candidate Allegedly Hires Thugs to Attack Vice Principal

It was a scene of tension at Complete Child Development College in Aule, Akure, Ondo State, after the Vice Principal, identified as Mr. Rotifa, was allegedly assaulted by thugs reportedly hired by a student’s parent. 

The incident occurred after the school official stopped a student from cheating during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

According to a preliminary investigation by the Ondo State Ministry of Education, the student was caught with an Android phone during the examination—a clear violation of school and examination rules. 

Mr. Rotifa confiscated the device, prompting backlash from the student’s family.

A report from the ministry’s Director of Schools stated that the student’s mother visited the school on May 30 to confront the management and demanded the phone’s return. 

The situation escalated, leading the school proprietor to hand the phone back to avoid further disruption.

However, the matter took a violent turn when the student’s brother—an ex-student of the same school—reportedly threatened the Vice Principal. 

That same day, the suspects were seen lingering around the school premises after closing hours, prompting the proprietor to advise Mr. Rotifa to report the incident to the police.

While accompanied by two police officers, Mr. Rotifa attempted to locate the suspects. 

But on the way back to the station, the group ambushed the police vehicle, dragged the Vice Principal out, and physically attacked him. 

He was later taken to the hospital for medical attention.

Though Mr. Rotifa has since been discharged, he has reportedly not returned home due to fears for his safety.

The Ministry of Education says efforts are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators, while steps are also being taken to ensure the security of staff and students for the duration of the exams.

Efforts to get a statement from the school principal were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
