The Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has abandoned several projects initiated by his late predecessor, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.
The party claimed that the governor’s actions suggest a deliberate effort to erase Akeredolu’s legacy in the state.
This accusation was made in a statement on Sunday by the PDP’s Director of Media and Publicity, Leye Igbabo, who said there is growing concern within the party over what it described as the governor’s apparent refusal to continue work on Akeredolu’s unfinished projects.
The PDP expressed belief that the governor’s actions are politically motivated and may be rooted in past tensions between Aiyedatiwa and Akeredolu’s camp.
According to the statement, there are reports that the governor had allegedly boasted about his power to halt any project that did not align with his personal agenda, even suggesting that those who had previously benefited from such projects should find alternative ways to complete them.
“Our party has enough reason to believe that the refusal to complete these projects is intentional,” the PDP said.
“There is no other explanation for why a sitting governor with access to vast resources would delay or abandon projects already underway, especially when governance is supposed to be continuous.”
Governor Aiyedatiwa assumed office following the death of Governor Akeredolu on December 27, 2023, after a prolonged illness.
He later emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate and won the governorship election held on November 16, 2024.
Responding to the allegations, the APC dismissed the claims as unfounded and politically motivated.
In a counter-statement, the party’s Director of Media and Publicity, Steve Otaloro, described the PDP’s claims as an attempt to mislead the public and remain relevant.
“The PDP is simply peddling falsehoods to create confusion,” Otaloro said. “Governor Aiyedatiwa is committed to completing all inherited projects. As someone who served as deputy governor under Akeredolu, he sees the previous administration as a continuation of his own.”
Otaloro highlighted that ongoing projects such as the Oda Road in Akure and its adjoining infrastructure, started under Akeredolu, are being actively pursued by the current administration.
He further accused the PDP of launching a smear campaign after its failure to win at the November 2024 election and subsequent loss at the tribunal.
“Their latest claims reflect a desperate strategy to remain in the spotlight, rather than offering genuine, constructive opposition,” he said.
The APC urged the PDP to address its internal issues, which have led to several defections, including that of serving governors, instead of resorting to propaganda and misinformation to sway public opinion.
