U.S. President Donald Trump has made it clear he has no plans to mend ties with Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur behind Tesla and SpaceX, following their public falling-out.
The rift between the two became public after Musk stepped down from his role as Trump’s adviser shortly after criticizing a tax bill supported by the administration.
While Musk claimed his departure was due to contractual obligations, Trump asserted he had asked Musk to step aside because he was “wearing thin.”
The situation escalated after the pair exchanged barbs on social media.
Musk, in a flurry of posts on X (formerly Twitter), accused Trump of being named in documents related to Jeffrey Epstein and warned that the president’s tariff policies would spark a recession.
He also voiced support for Trump’s impeachment, alleging the president was ungrateful despite Musk’s help during the election.
Although many of those posts have since been removed, the damage appears permanent.
In a phone interview with NBC News on Saturday, Trump described Musk as “disrespectful to the office of the president.”
When asked whether their relationship was salvageable, Trump responded, “I would assume so, yeah,” and followed up with a firm “No” when questioned if he wanted to repair things.
“I’m too busy doing other things,” he added. “I have no intention of speaking to him.
"I think it’s a very bad thing because he’s very disrespectful. You could not disrespect the office of the president.”
The fallout comes as Trump’s controversial tax reform package, dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill,” awaits Senate deliberation after passing in the House.
Musk, a vocal critic of the bill, has reportedly considered financing Democratic campaigns to oppose GOP lawmakers who support it.
Trump warned of “serious consequences” should Musk follow through, although he did not provide specifics.
He also shrugged off Musk’s Epstein-related allegations, labelling them “old news.”
“Even Epstein’s lawyer said I had nothing to do with it,” Trump told NBC.
As a final blow, the president revealed he plans to withdraw federal contracts from Musk’s ventures in light of the dispute.
