I Have Respect for Peter Obi, My Statement Misunderstood – Okpebholo

Amid public criticism over comments made regarding Peter Obi’s visit to Edo, Governor Monday Okpebholo has issued a clarification, asserting that his statement was rooted in official protocol rather than personal bias.

The controversy began after the governor, while welcoming defectors into the APC on Friday, warned the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential flagbearer not to enter Edo State without proper security arrangements. 

He linked Obi’s visit to a spike in violent incidents and questioned a cash donation reportedly made during the trip.

“Someone who says he’s broke came and donated ₦15 million. After his departure, three people died. He cannot come here again without notifying security,” the governor had stated.

The remark drew swift condemnation from several quarters, including Labour Party lawmakers, members of the ADC, and numerous Nigerians who felt it was inappropriate and politically insensitive.

In a statement made available on Sunday, Okpebholo’s media aide, Fred Itua, said the governor was merely stressing the importance of protocol in official visits and was not attempting to target or malign Peter Obi.

“Edo State is home to all Nigerians, regardless of their background, faith, or political leaning,” Itua explained. “The governor’s position is one of order and respect for institutions, not hostility.”

He described Okpebholo as a leader focused on unity and development, citing ongoing reforms in education, agriculture, and security as evidence of a forward-looking administration. The governor’s policies, the statement added, aim to restore trust and progress across the state.

Drawing from historic reflections like those of the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Itua said the governor’s leadership is driven by context and duty to the people of Edo.

“Where there is confusion, leaders must offer clarity, not conflict,” he stated. 

“The governor respects Mr Peter Obi and all political figures contributing to Nigeria’s democracy. However, respect for official procedure must remain a constant.”

He urged all Nigerians to focus on shared goals and work together to tackle pressing issues like unemployment, education reform, and public safety, rather than allow political misunderstandings to breed division.
