Ex Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has defended the late President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration against criticisms concerning its anti-corruption efforts.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News Tuesday night, Malami stated that corruption was actively suppressed during Buhari’s time in office, contrary to public perception.
“Corruption did not thrive under President Muhammadu Buhari,” Malami asserted.
“In fact, the government secured thousands of convictions in high-profile corruption cases during that period.”
He added that the administration recovered over $2 billion in stolen public funds, pointing to this as proof of the seriousness with which the fight against corruption was pursued.
Malami also highlighted some structural reforms initiated by Buhari’s government to combat financial misconduct, including the implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) and the Bank Verification Number (BVN) system, both of which he said were instrumental in reducing financial leakages.
“The Treasury Single Account introduced transparency and improved oversight of government finances,” he said.
According to Malami, the administration also earned international recognition for its anti-corruption stance.
He noted that the African Union once named Buhari as the continent’s anti-corruption champion, and that the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime acknowledged the government’s efforts.
