Mother Kills Two Children Over Depression

It was a sad scene in the Trans Ekulu area of Enugu following a horrifying incident where two young children were found dead in their home, allegedly killed by their mother in a shocking act of violence.

The victims, four-year-old Esther Arinze and her three-month-old brother, Chibusoma, were discovered on Monday morning with deep cuts believed to have been inflicted using a sharp object. 

The disturbing scene unfolded inside their residence at No. 47 Unity Road, shattering the peace of the usually quiet neighbourhood.

According to police sources, officers from the Trans Ekulu Division were alerted through a distress call around 9 a.m. on July 21. 

Upon arrival, the bodies of the children were found lifeless, with visible injuries that suggested a brutal attack.

“It’s one of the most painful and shocking scenes we’ve encountered,” a source familiar with the investigation said. 

“The children appeared to have suffered multiple wounds.”

The remains were later taken to the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUT), Parklane, where doctors confirmed they were dead on arrival. 

The bodies have since been deposited at the morgue for autopsy.

Although the motive behind the tragedy remains unclear, some members of the community suspect that mental health challenges may have played a role in the heartbreaking event.

“She never caused trouble,” a neighbour said of the mother. “She was always quiet and looked like someone taking care of her family. No one saw this coming.”

Investigations are currently underway to determine what may have led to the suspected filicide. 

The police have promised a thorough probe, including possible psychological evaluations to understand the suspect’s mental state.

“We are approaching this case with all the seriousness it deserves,” a senior officer said. “There will be no rush to conclusions until all facts are established.”

As authorities dig deeper, the Trans Ekulu community is left in mourning, struggling to come to terms with a tragedy that claimed two innocent lives and raised haunting questions about unseen struggles behind closed doors.
