The Green Legacy Hotel, affiliated with the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), has issued a stern warning to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following an aggressive raid by the agency’s operatives early Sunday morning.
In a strongly worded statement, Vitalis Ortese, Managing Director of Green Legacy Hotel, described how approximately 50 heavily armed EFCC agents stormed the hotel premises around 2 a.m., disrupting a private event.
The hotel management condemned the raid as violent and intimidating, with operatives reportedly firing gunshots and threatening lives during what was meant to be a peaceful gathering.
Ortese emphasized that the event had been openly advertised to the public well in advance and that no prior notice was given to the hotel or the event organizers about any planned EFCC operation.
Furthermore, the police officers stationed at the OOPL entrance and those dispatched from the nearby Kemta Police Station confirmed they had not been informed of the raid, nor was any warrant presented by the EFCC team.
“This was not just an unauthorized intrusion; it was an unlawful invasion of private property, a breach of our rights as a corporate citizen, and a blatant disregard for the safety of attendees,” Ortese said.
The hotel management demanded a formal explanation and a public apology from the EFCC for the unwarranted disruption and the injuries sustained by several guests amid the chaotic incident.
They warned that failure to comply would leave them with no option but to pursue legal action to seek redress.
“The aggressive behavior exhibited by the EFCC operatives has caused serious harm and distress.
"We expect the commission to acknowledge their misconduct and make amends promptly,” the statement added.
This confrontation raises serious questions about the conduct of law enforcement agencies and the protection of private entities’ rights during enforcement operations in Nigeria.
