FG to Shut Niger Republic Border in Jigawa

The Federal Government will temporarily close the country’s border with Niger Republic in Jigawa State as part of heightened security measures ahead of Saturday’s by-election.

The move is intended to curb cross-border crimes, prevent external interference and safeguard the electoral process in the Garki/Babura Federal Constituency, which shares boundaries with Niger Republic through several local government areas, including Babura, the constituency headquarters.

The decision followed a meeting between officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and heads of security agencies on Wednesday in Dutse, the state capital.

Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Dahiru Muhammad, told The PUNCH that security forces will embark on a two-day “show of force” in Garki and Babura local government areas from Thursday to Friday to underscore their readiness to maintain peace.

As part of the strategy, Muhammad disclosed that the border with Niger Republic will be closed from midnight on Friday until 6 p.m. on election day.

“This is aimed at preventing any external interference or influence on the election.

“The temporary border closure is expected to impact on cross-border activities, and it is necessary for us to ensure the integrity of the election,” he highlighted.

The police chief explained that a three-layer security arrangement will be deployed to protect voters, election officials, and other stakeholders across polling units.

“This is aimed at ensuring the safety of voters, election officials, and other stakeholders,” he noted.

He added that a main security situation room will operate from Babura town to coordinate operations.

“An emergency telephone number will also be provided for reporting incidents before, during, or after the election,” he added.

Muhammad said all security agencies will work jointly to ensure a smooth process.

“Strategic locations will be provided with maximum security during the election period,” he explained.

The commissioner assured residents that adequate measures have been taken to guarantee a peaceful poll, urging citizens to participate fully in the exercise. 

He also commended INEC and other security agencies for their collaboration in maintaining order.
