The Lagos State Government has raised concerns over the quality of water people in Lekki consume, saying many who drill boreholes in the area are likely drinking “shit water.”
The warning came from Mahmood Adegbite, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, during a recent stakeholders meeting.
He explained that untreated waste is seeping into underground water, contaminating boreholes across the Lekki axis.
“Everyone digging borehole within the Lekki axis is probably drinking what I will call ‘shit water,” Adegbite said, stressing the urgent need for wastewater treatment systems in the area to prevent possible disease outbreaks.
He also acknowledged the government’s ongoing struggle with flooding, noting that despite heavy investments, more work is needed.
Citing the recent unusual rainfall in August, he described the weather patterns and flooding issues as complex and persistent.
Adegbite assured residents that there are plans in place to treat wastewater and improve drainage infrastructure, but admitted progress is still slow.
His remarks have sparked a wave of online reactions from concerned citizens.
