Presidency Finally Breaks Silence on Tinubu’s Illness, Medical Trip

The Presidency has dismissed widespread speculation that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is ill or preparing for an overseas medical trip, insisting he remains in good health and continues to discharge his duties.

Reports by the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) had claimed the president had been bedridden for days, forcing him to miss major public functions and delegate several official duties to Vice President Kashim Shettima. 

The medium also alleged that parts of Tinubu’s schedule had been cleared so his medical team could monitor him closely.

However, reacting, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the claims as baseless.

“People just tell you all kinds of rumours that have no basis at all,” Onanuga told Daily Trust. 

“There is nothing wrong with the president. He is okay. He can choose to work from home or anywhere. I was with him in his office yesterday (August 5). He came to work.”

The president’s recent absence from some state events, including the reception for the victorious D’Tigress basketball team, had fuelled speculation about his health. 

Shettima stood in for him at the August 3 ceremony, just days after Tinubu personally hosted the Super Falcons following their WAFCON triumph.

Onanuga stressed that the president is not obligated to attend every public engagement, adding, “Why must he be at all functions? He has a deputy. He can delegate.”

Although the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting was postponed last week, the presidential aide said the decision was made by Tinubu himself and was not linked to any health concerns.

“Yes, he postponed it. It’s not an issue. There is no fixed time for FEC; it can be held on Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday,” Onanuga explained.

AFRIPOST reports that despite his limited public appearances, the Presidency has continued to issue official statements and policy directives, including a recent order to provide free healthcare for low-income retirees and increase pensions.

Tinubu’s last public outing was on August 1, when he attended the opening of the Progressive Media Summit in Abuja, where he appeared in good spirits and encouraged young Nigerians to use digital platforms for national development.
