The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State has condemned the arrest of Aminu Tambuwal by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing the move as politically motivated.
AFRIPOST had reported yesterday that Tambuwal, who served as governor of Sokoto State for eight years and also a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, was taken into custody by the EFCC on Monday over alleged financial misconduct during his time in office.
In a statement released early Tuesday and signed by PDP Publicity Secretary Hassan Sanyinnawal, the party claimed the arrest was a strategy by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government to intimidate political opponents and stifle dissent against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“The so-called investigation is nothing more than a fishing expedition, revived from an old phantom case that has failed to produce evidence in the past.
“It is the handiwork of political actors in Sokoto and Abuja who are desperate to smear Tambuwal’s enviable image and force him to abandon his stand against misrule,” the statement partly read.
The PDP maintained that Tambuwal’s tenure was characterized by fiscal discipline and transparency, while accusing the EFCC of selective prosecution by overlooking alleged corruption cases involving members of the ruling party.
Calling on anti-corruption agencies to uphold fairness and impartiality, the party urged its supporters and the people in the state to stay calm.
“Our trust in Tambuwal’s integrity cannot be shaken by politically motivated probes,” the party declared.
