Wike Reveals Date to End Rivers State of Emergency Rule

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed optimism that the state of emergency in Rivers State will end on September 18, paving the way for the resumption of normal governance.

Wike, a former governor of the state, remarked shortly after casting his vote in the ongoing local government elections in Rivers on Saturday.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier declared emergency rule in the state following escalating political tensions. 

As part of the measures, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly were suspended for six months to prevent a full-blown crisis.

Speaking on the sidelines of the election, Wike described the process as peaceful and orderly, noting the strong turnout of voters. 

“What we are witnessing today is encouraging. People are participating, and the atmosphere is calm. By the time the polls close, we can say the exercise has been conducted smoothly,” he said.

The minister further explained that the expiration of the emergency rule would restore legislative and grassroots governance. 

“Once the emergency period lapses on September 18, the assembly will resume its constitutional duties, and local government administrations can function effectively again,” he added.

Wike also noted that both the state and local governments now have representatives ready to step in once the suspension is lifted. 

“The path is clear for Rivers to return to normalcy. With elected officials in place at all levels, we are prepared to move forward,” he stated.

The development signals a possible end to months of political uncertainty in Rivers State, which has been under tight federal oversight since the suspension took effect.
