The Federal Government has filed a five-count charge against social media platforms X (formerly Twitter), Meta (owners of Facebook), and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore.
The charges, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2015, were lodged at the Federal High Court in Abuja, with the Federal Republic of Nigeria listed as complainant, while Sowore, X Inc. and Meta Inc. are named as defendants.
According to court documents, Sowore allegedly used his official X handle, @YeleSowore, and his Facebook page to publish posts on August 25 and 26, 2025, in which he described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “criminal” and accused him of making false claims about corruption during an official trip to Brazil.
The Department of State Services (DSS) said the posts were defamatory and capable of inciting public disorder, contrary to provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Amendment Act, 2024, and sections of the Criminal Code Act.
Count one and two accused Sowore of knowingly posting false information on both platforms to cause a breakdown of law and order.
Counts three and four specifically alleged defamation against the person and reputation of President Tinubu.
Count five charged him with publishing false information with intent to cause public fear and disturbance.
