It was a tragic scene in Abuja on Sunday morning as a senior officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) accidentally shot a colleague, leaving him dead.

According to sources familiar with the incident, Deputy Superintendent Adekunle Emmanuel was fatally injured around 10:20 a.m. while on duty.

The officer sustained a gunshot wound to the upper left arm, just above the bicep, during what authorities described as an unintended discharge by a fellow operative.

“The incident occurred as they were heading to a principal’s residence at Lias Estate from Corner View Hotel,” a source told reporters.

“It was purely accidental, but unfortunately, Emmanuel did not survive.”

The injured officer was rushed to Maitama General Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead on arrival.

His remains have been preserved at the hospital morgue pending an autopsy.

Authorities confirmed that the colleague involved in the shooting is currently in custody and undergoing interrogation as part of an ongoing investigation into the fatal mishap.

An NSCDC spokesperson described the incident as “a tragic accident that underscores the need for strict adherence to safety protocols during operations.”

Officials have assured the public that the case will be thoroughly investigated to determine how the fatal incident occurred and to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
