2027: Obi Dismisses Forming Political Alliance With Jonathan

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has debunked claims suggesting that he is forming a political alliance with former President Goodluck Jonathan to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

The clarification follows widespread speculation after Obi’s recent private meeting with Jonathan in Abuja. 

The encounter, which was held behind closed doors, sparked online debates and fueled rumours of an emerging coalition among opposition figures.

Supporters of both politicians have since flooded social media with calls for unity, with some suggesting that one of them should step down in favour of the other to strengthen the opposition’s chances in 2027.

However, Obi’s camp has dismissed the claims as mere political gossip. 

Speaking through his media aide and National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Yunusa Tanko, Obi said the meeting with Jonathan was purely a friendly conversation and not politically motivated.

According to Tanko, the two leaders share mutual respect and have often exchanged ideas on national development. 

“They are both statesmen who care deeply about Nigeria’s future. Their meeting was simply about the country, not politics,” he said.

He added that while both men are open to discussions on how to move Nigeria forward, there was “no pact or agreement” concerning the 2027 elections. 

“People should not read meaning into a simple conversation. Even when they met earlier in Ghana, there was nothing of that nature,” Tanko clarified.

The statement comes amid growing interest in possible opposition realignments as Nigeria moves closer to another election cycle. 

Meanwhile, political analysts believe that any collaboration among key opposition figures could reshape the 2027 political landscape, but for now, Peter Obi insists that no such talks are in motion.
