Africa’s football spotlight is once again shining brightly on Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen, who has been listed among the nominees for the 2025 CAF Player of the Year award.
The Confederation of African Football released the names of the contenders on Wednesday featuring an impressive mix of established icons and emerging stars dominating both local and international stages.
Osimhen, widely regarded as one of the most lethal strikers on the continent, joins Egypt’s Mohamed Salah of Liverpool and Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi of Paris Saint-Germain in the race for Africa’s top individual football honour.
Also nominated are Cameroon’s Frank Anguissa, Congo’s Fiston Mayele, Gabon’s Denis Bouanga, Guinea’s in-form forward Serhou Guirassy, Morocco’s Oussama Lamlioui, and Senegalese duo Iliman Ndiaye and Pape Matar Sarr.
The CAF Awards celebrate the best of African football each year, recognising players, coaches, clubs, and national teams that have excelled on and off the pitch.
A CAF statement described the ceremony as a “tribute to African excellence and dedication,” adding that the awards are designed to “honour those who elevate the game through talent, passion, and commitment.”
Sports analyst Bashir Lawal said Osimhen’s presence among the nominees was “no surprise to anyone following African football.”
According to him, “Osimhen has carried the Nigerian flag with pride, consistently proving he belongs among the continent’s very best.”
With some of Africa’s biggest football names set to battle for the crown, anticipation is building ahead of the awards gala, which will celebrate the continent’s finest achievements in football for 2025.
