Tanzania Bans X, Gives Access to Govt Officials Only

Tanzania has officially blocked access to the microblogging media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), citing cybersecurity threats and the spread of false information.

The move is coming after a series of cyberattacks targeting government accounts, which led to the dissemination of fake and explicit content. 

As a result, only government officials, including President Samia Suluhu Hassan, currently have access to the platform.

The government justified the ban by pointing to X’s allowance of content deemed contrary to national laws, culture, customs, and traditions.

Information Minister Jerry Silaa, explained that the platform’s updated policies permit explicit sexual material, which contradicts Tanzanian legislation and societal values.

This marks the second time in less than a year that Tanzania has blocked access to X, raising concerns about digital freedoms in the country.

The restriction has however resulted to increase in use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) among Tanzanians attempting to access the platform despite government regulations.

Analysts note that these restrictions highlight the ongoing tension between digital governance and citizens’ access to free information.
