A women leader in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State has decried the continued attacks on her community by suspected Fulani militants.
She alleged that women and girls have become victims of rape and murder on their farmlands.
The distraught leader made the revelations while speaking with a fact-finding delegation from Equipping The Persecuted Organization, a humanitarian group that supports persecuted Christian communities worldwide.
She lamented that the women in the area have been enduring unimaginable suffering and humiliation in the hands of their attackers.
The group, which visited the community to assess the extent of the crisis, was told that the perpetrators have turned the area into a zone of horror, targeting women and young girls.
“Our women have been going through a lot of humiliation at the hands of the Fulani herdsmen who would waylay them on their farms, gang-rape them, and anyone who dares to resist is slaughtered like an animal,” she said.
According to her, the situation has left many families in trauma as residents can no longer go to their farms or sleep peacefully in their homes due to constant fear of attacks.
“We can’t sleep in our homes, we can’t go to the farm, we can’t go out and work for our daily bread. They have been hunting us as if we were animals. Even when the women are on the farms, they would go and rape them. Even the girl-child, they rape them too.
“We have the details of women and girls who have been raped. There are so many. We have the data of the women they have raped and those they have killed.
“And we don’t have anyone to stand for us. We have a government in this state, but we have been left vulnerable,” she lamented.
The community, according to reports, has suffered repeated attacks in recent years, leading to displacement, destruction of farmlands, and loss of lives.
Residents have continued to appeal to the government and security agencies to intervene and restore peace to the troubled area.
