ADC Rejects Atiku’s Membership, Says Due Process Not Followed

The national leadership of the African Democratic Congress has insisted that Atiku Abubakar’s recent registration in Adamawa does not amount to valid membership, arguing that the process ignored the party’s constitutional requirements and bypassed its authorised ward structures. 

The party’s clarification followed the former vice president’s public announcement that he had formally joined the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections.

ADC’s Director of Media and Public Affairs, Christopher O. Okechukwu, stated that Atiku’s registration in Jada Ward was not conducted by officials recognised by the national headquarters, stressing that the party had repeatedly advised him to complete the process with the legitimate ward executives.

According to him, the development “raises concerns about a broader pattern in which influential politicians attempt to use the ADC as a temporary platform while waiting for reconciliation elsewhere.” 

He added that Atiku would only enjoy full rights and privileges once he regularises his membership through the proper channels.

Furthermore, the clarification comes amid a leadership dispute within the ADC, with a case still before the Federal High Court on the legitimacy of the David Mark–led faction. 

Okechukwu said the party remains committed to internal democracy and transparent procedures despite ongoing political realignments.

Earlier on Monday, Atiku announced his move to the ADC via his X handle, posting images of himself receiving a membership card and a “Waziri 01” jersey during a ceremony in Yola. 

His defection followed his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party after a prolonged rift with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and other members of the G-5 bloc.

Meanwhile, ADC National Vice Chairman, Senator Suleiman Nazif Gamawa, described the party as the most credible alternative for Nigerians facing rising hardship. 

He predicted that the ADC would emerge as a dominant force in 2027, insisting that electoral success does not depend on sitting governors. 

Gamawa urged Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards, warning that failure to participate actively in elections would prolong the nation’s governance challenges.
