Again Bandits Strike Niger, Kidnap 20 Farmers

At least 20 farmers, among them four pregnant women and several children, were reportedly kidnapped in Unguwan-Kawo, Erena Ward, within Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State. 

The victims were said to have been seized while harvesting rice in their fields around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, November 26.

One local resident, who asked not to be named, revealed that his nephew was among the abducted. 

He expressed shock that the attack occurred only 500 meters from Erena town, where a military camp is stationed. 

“It’s frightening that such an incident could happen so close to security forces,” he said.

AFRIPOST reports that this abduction follows a recent spate of attacks in Niger State, coming just six days after over 200 students and staff were kidnapped from St. Mary Secondary and Primary School in Papiri, Agwara LGA. 

The proximity of these incidents has raised concerns about the increasing boldness of bandit groups in the region.

Meanwhile, when reached for comment, SP Wasiu Abiodun, spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, said the report was being verified. 

“We are currently confirming the details of this incident and will provide updates as soon as possible,” he said.

However, residents of Unguwan-Kawo expressed growing fear as farming communities, particularly those near Erena town, feel increasingly vulnerable. Local leaders are calling for intensified security measures to prevent further attacks.
