Samuel Anyanwu, a senior figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has denounced the party’s national convention held in Ibadan over the weekend, claiming it breached essential procedural guidelines and lacked legitimacy.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, the former national secretary dismissed the convention as an unserious event driven by political theatrics rather than due process.
He insisted the party failed to fulfil fundamental requirements before convening such a gathering.
Anyanwu noted that many state chapters, particularly those in the South-East, had not completed their congresses.
He argued that this alone rendered the Ibadan meeting improper.
“What people saw in Ibadan was not a convention; it was a political carnival dressed up as a serious exercise,” he said.
He added that even states that successfully conducted their congresses had not transmitted their reports to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before the factional leadership went ahead with the event.
According to him, the process “violated both the spirit and letter of the party’s guidelines.”
Anyanwu further criticised the absence of numerous state delegates, stating that the gathering lacked the broad representation required to be recognised as a legitimate convention.
“You cannot claim to uphold party rules while breaking them at the foundation,” he stated.
The Ibadan convention had expelled several party stalwarts, including Nyesom Wike and Ayo Fayose, while announcing Taminu Turaki as the new National Chairman.
The fallout from the controversial meeting is expected to intensify internal disputes as the PDP grapples with questions about leadership, structure, and the future of its internal democracy.
