Nigeria’s top security officials are set to brief the nation later today following recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump threatening to deploy American troops to combat terrorism in the country.
According to information obtained by The Nation, the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), alongside heads of security agencies, will meet the press to address the situation.
The planned media session is expected to clarify Nigeria’s position and ongoing efforts to combat insecurity across the country.
Speaking during the monthly National Joint Security Press Briefing in Abuja, the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, confirmed the development.
He noted that the government considered it necessary to respond comprehensively to President Trump’s remarks and the accusations of genocide reportedly linked to Nigeria’s counterterrorism operations.
“The forthcoming briefing will give Nigerians and the international community a clearer understanding of the realities on the ground,” Issa-Onilu said.
“It is important to present facts and demonstrate that our security forces are working within lawful and professional boundaries.”
He further explained that the engagement forms part of the government’s wider transparency efforts to keep citizens informed about ongoing measures to curb insurgency, banditry, and other security challenges affecting various parts of the country.
Issa-Onilu emphasized that the government remains committed to protecting lives and upholding human rights while confronting threats to national stability.
“The narrative must be balanced,” he added. “Nigeria will not allow misinformation or politically motivated statements to undermine the sacrifices of our security personnel.”
The upcoming press conference is expected to draw attention from both local and international media as Nigeria seeks to defend its sovereignty amid growing diplomatic tension following President Trump’s recent declaration.
