President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the withdrawal of police officers attached to Very Important Persons across the country, directing that they be reassigned to regular policing duties to boost security presence nationwide.
The directive was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, following a high-level security meeting in Abuja.
According to the Presidency, VIPs who require escorts will now obtain armed protection from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, while police personnel previously assigned to such duties will be deployed to communities currently underserved by the force.
The meeting where the directive was issued had in attendance the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Waidi Shaibu; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and Director-General of the Department of State Services, Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
The move, the Presidency said, is part of efforts to address the shortage of police officers in several remote areas where insecurity has worsened due to limited manpower.
To reinforce this initiative, President Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police personnel.
The Federal Government is also collaborating with states to upgrade training facilities across the country.
Onanuga noted that the President’s directive reflects his determination to improve police visibility and strengthen national security architecture.
