Delegates arriving for the Peoples Democratic Party’s national convention in Ibadan were greeted on Friday by a wave of boldly printed banners urging Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to join the 2027 presidential contest.
The colourful displays immediately energised the atmosphere around the gathering, signalling a growing push from support groups positioning him for the race.
Large posters carrying Makinde’s image were placed at key entry points of the Adamasingba Stadium, the venue hosting the November 15–16 convention.
The banners, mounted by different support groups, appeared strategically positioned to catch the attention of party leaders and delegates streaming into the city.
One of the banners, credited to a coalition called Lana Fun Seyi, carried a simple but striking message: “Seyi Makinde for President.” Another group, led by Fapetu Stephen from Ido Local Government, displayed a separate poster promising that “Seyi Makinde will fix Nigeria 2027.”
Several delegates who arrived early described the campaign materials as a strong indicator of Makinde’s rising influence.
A party stakeholder from the South-West told our correspondent, “People are reading meanings into these posters, but what they really show is that many believe he has the capacity to lead beyond Oyo.”
Makinde, however, has maintained a cautious stance on his political future.
Despite months of speculation, he has consistently said he will reveal his next move at the “appropriate time.” He previously criticised the rumours as “unsolicited commentary,” arguing that he does not need external approval before declaring his intentions.
Moreover, the stadium was not exclusive to Makinde-themed banners. Posters promoting other PDP aspirants vying for national positions formed a key part of the scenery.
Campaign materials for Kabiru Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties seeking the national chairmanship, appeared in multiple corners of the arena.
Supporters of former Deputy National Chairman Taofeek Arapaja also lined the venue with banners endorsing his bid to become National Secretary.
The fusion of colours, images and slogans contributed to a lively pre-convention mood as thousands of delegates continued arriving in the Oyo capital.
A party organiser described the scene as “a preview of the intense political fireworks the convention will produce.”
The national convention is expected to usher in a new National Working Committee that will oversee the PDP’s affairs as Nigeria moves toward the decisive 2027 general elections.
