Insecurity: Nigeria Will Not Fail - Buratai

Former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has rejected claims that Nigeria is on the brink of collapse, calling such projections misguided and dismissive of the nation’s resilience.

In a statement titled “Nigeria: An Unbreakable Nation Rising Through Challenges,” Buratai argued that assessments like the 2011 CSAT report fail to consider leadership reforms and the determination of Nigerians.

He highlighted the country’s ability to endure political upheavals, economic shocks, and security threats that might have destabilised other nations.

“From independence to date, our leaders, civilian and military, have steered this country out of storms many nations would not survive.

“Nigeria cannot and will not fail,” Buratai said.

The former army chief commended past leaders, including Nnamdi Azikiwe, Ahmadu Bello, Yakubu Gowon, and Murtala Mohammed, for guiding the nation through critical periods, noting that today’s leadership is more accountable and engaged with citizens.

Buratai acknowledged economic challenges but insisted that judging Nigeria solely on current difficulties is “shortsighted,” pointing to the country’s position as Africa’s largest economy and its growth in sectors like telecommunications, fintech, entertainment, and human capital development.

On security, he described current challenges as a “renewal phase,” noting that Boko Haram has been significantly weakened. 

He also cited infrastructure projects such as railway modernisation, road constructions, airport upgrades, and the Dangote refinery as proof of the country’s forward momentum.

Buratai criticised Western institutions for “doomsday projections” and urged global partners to prioritise investment, technology transfer, and fair trade, while advising Nigerian leaders to diversify the economy, decentralise security measures, and foster civic patriotism.

“Nigeria’s destiny lies in the hands of Nigerians, a people blessed with abundant resources and an unbreakable spirit. We will not fail. We are rising,” he said.
