The Economic Community of West African States on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in the region, citing escalating instability and repeated attempts to undermine democratic governance.
The announcement was made by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level, held in Abuja.
The meeting was convened in response to a wave of coups, attempted coups and growing security threats spreading across the sub-region.
Touray said the troubling developments underscore the “imperative of serious introspection on the future of our democracy and the urgent need to invest in the security of our community.”
The declaration signals heightened concern within the bloc over the deepening political and security crisis, particularly in countries that have recently experienced unconstitutional changes of government.
