Controversial Nigerian street pop singer, Habeeb Okikiola, well known as Portable, has been remanded in custody by the Ogun State High Court sitting in Onipanu, Ota, following his arraignment on multiple criminal charges.
Portable is currently facing fresh charges counts bordering on assault, felony occasioning harm and resisting arrest.
Prosecutors told the court that the musician allegedly attacked one of his wives, Ashabi, and obstructed a female police officer, Inspector Ogungbe Olayemi, while she was performing her official duties. He was also accused of assaulting the officer during the incident.
The court further heard that Portable allegedly attacked other individuals at his Odogwu Bar on New Year’s Day.
Although the alleged victim, Ashabi, was absent from the proceedings, her two siblings were present in court as witnesses. During the hearing, Portable became emotional and reportedly broke down in tears.
His counsel applied for bail, but the presiding judge declined to grant the application, stressing that the assaulted police officer was not present in court. The judge noted that her testimony was crucial before any decision could be taken on the bail request.
Consequently, the court ordered that Portable be remanded in custody until January 19, when his bail application will be considered.
