The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has officially scheduled the next local government council elections for January 16, 2027.
The announcement was made on Thursday following the commission’s inaugural meeting held at its headquarters in Agodi, Ibadan. The meeting, presided over by the OYSIEC Chairman, Dr. Babatunde Afees Adeniyi, focused on strategizing for a “transparent, credible, and peaceful” electoral process across the Pacesetter State.
According to the statement released by Dr. Adeniyi, the elections will take place across all polling units in the 33 local government areas of the state.
The Commission clarified that the current tenure of the chairmen and councillors across the 33 councils is set to expire on May 23, 2027.
Dr. Adeniyi noted that the early announcement complies with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), which mandates that notice for an election be issued at least 360 days before the polling date.
“Notice is hereby given that the local government council elections shall be conducted… pursuant to the provisions of Section 28 of the Electoral Act 2022 and the OYSIEC Law, Cap 154 Laws of Oyo State,” the statement read.
The OYSIEC boss urged all stakeholders, including political parties, security agencies, and the general public, to provide the necessary support to ensure a hitch-free exercise. He emphasized the commission’s commitment to delivering a result that is acceptable to all residents of the state.
