Varsity Bans Dreadlocks, Beards, Scraps Hair Passes

The management of Babcock University has introduced a new dress code and grooming guidelines for students, banning dreadlocks, beards, and other unapproved hairstyles ahead of the institution’s forthcoming examinations.

In a statement signed by Olaniyi Arije, Vice President for Student Development, the university announced the nullification of all hair-pass tags with immediate effect. Hair-pass tags, according to the management, are illegal documents previously issued to some students as waivers to keep specific hairstyles.

Babcock University clarified that possession of a hair pass does not confer any legitimate right to grow or maintain hairstyles that are inconsistent with the institution’s approved standards. Consequently, the use, circulation, or recognition of hair passes in any form has been outlawed across all Babcock campuses.

The university stated that the new regulations will officially take effect at the commencement of the second semester in January and will be strictly enforced. Students currently in possession of any hair-pass or exemption have been directed to immediately discontinue its use.

“Any student found presenting, using, or relying on such a document shall be investigated for violation of university regulations and, if found liable, shall face the inevitable consequences,” the statement said.

Under the revised dress code, male students are prohibited from wearing dreadlocks, beards, or keeping voluminous and unkempt hair. Female students, on the other hand, are barred from extreme, indecent, or hairstyle patterns deemed inconsistent with the university’s standards.

The management also listed several prohibited clothing items, including body-hugging outfits, sleeveless blouses or dresses, sagging trousers, as well as baggy, boot-cut, or over-length trousers. In addition, tying scarves to corporate or official academic wear at certain times has been banned.

Babcock further stated that outfits such as bubu, dansiki, joggers, sportswear, and walk-out wear are not allowed within stipulated periods on campus. Any student found in possession of prohibited items, the university warned, will face disciplinary action.
