JUST IN: Bayelsa Assembly Confirms Peter As New Deputy Governor

The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has confirmed Pastor Peter Akpe as the new Deputy Governor, paving the way for his formal inauguration into the state’s second-highest executive office.

Lawmakers ratified his nomination after deliberations, effectively concluding the constitutional process required for the appointment. 

The decision signals a fresh consolidation of the administration led by Governor Douye Diri.

Akpe, who previously served as Chief of Staff to the governor, is widely regarded as a trusted ally within the government. 

His elevation, according to legislative sources, reflects continuity in the state’s political structure.

“His experience in governance and legislative leadership makes him well-prepared for this responsibility,” a member of the Assembly said after the confirmation session. 

“The House is confident he will complement the governor’s agenda.”

Before his nomination, Akpe combined clerical duties with public service. 

Ordained in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, he built a career that straddled the civil service and partisan politics.

His public sector journey began in both Rivers and Bayelsa states, where he worked within the civil service system before transitioning fully into politics. 

That shift marked the start of a steady rise through the ranks of state leadership.

Between 2011 and 2019, he represented his constituency in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, serving two consecutive terms. 

Throughout that period, he held the influential position of Majority Leader, overseeing legislative coordination and party strategy.

Earlier, from 2008 to 2011, Akpe was appointed commissioner during the administration of Seriake Dickson, further expanding his executive credentials.

Political observers note that his blend of legislative insight, executive exposure, and religious leadership may shape his approach to governance. 

“He understands the machinery of government from multiple angles,” a political analyst in Yenagoa said. “That institutional memory could prove valuable.”

With the Assembly’s endorsement secured, attention now turns to his swearing-in ceremony, which will formally install him as Bayelsa’s Deputy Governor and solidify the next phase of the state’s executive leadership.
