Inspector‑General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has allegedly resigned from his position following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, presidency sources have said.
According to multiple senior officials familiar with the matter, Egbetokun tendered his resignation during the session on Monday, February 23, 2026, amid ongoing debates over his continued tenure in office.
The presidency sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the development to news outlets but no formal statement has yet been released by the Nigeria Police Force or the Office of the President.
They also indicated that Tunji Disu, the current head of the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Lagos, has been named as the intended successor.
Egbetokun’s time as IGP had drawn public attention after legal and political debate over his extension beyond the traditional police retirement age, a situation made possible by amendments to the Police Act designed to allow a full four‑year term.
