Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has said he remains undeterred by the growing number of governors joining the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting he will contest the 2027 presidential election.
Obi made the remarks on Friday in Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, during an empowerment programme sponsored by George Ozodinobi, the member representing Dunukofia/Njikoka/Anaocha Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Speaking to residents, Obi said his move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was necessary after prolonged leadership disputes in the Labour Party, noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) initially ignored favourable court judgments in his party.
He said: “People have been asking why I left the Labour Party. We had been fighting in court over leadership issues and securing favourable rulings, yet INEC refused to recognise them. When I left on December 31, 2025, the same orders were finally recognised.”
The former governor accused some political actors of manipulating the Constitution to prevent him from contesting the presidency but challenged them to conduct free and fair elections.
“With their 30 governors, they should make the election free and fair and see who wins. No matter what they do, I must contest. Let them declare a fair contest and let’s see what happens,” he said.
Obi also lamented the state of the nation, describing the system as broken and skewed in favour of the wealthy.
“Nigeria has collapsed totally. Many rich Nigerians are hungry and greedy. They have all they need but still scramble for more. This country is skewed against the poor, and that is why we are working to become president,” he said.
He highlighted the irony of well-to-do citizens seeking support from empowerment initiatives, saying many of them already have more than they need.
“This is an empowerment programme, but you will be surprised that many affluent people struggle for things they do not need. Go to their homes and you will see vehicles far better than what they are receiving,” Obi added.
The former governor reiterated his commitment to creating a Nigeria where anyone, regardless of background, can succeed.
“I have never been desperate to be president; I am desperate to see a Nigeria that works,” he said.
Obi concluded by commending Ozodinobi for the empowerment programme, noting that initiatives like this reinforce the need for electing competent leaders who genuinely serve the people.
