BREAKING: Court Bars Aiyedatiwa From Seeking Another Term

The Federal High Court sitting in Akure has ruled that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa cannot run for a second term in office.

Justice Toyin Bolaji Adegoke, delivering the judgment on Thursday, noted that the 1999 Constitution (as amended) does not permit any President, Vice President, Governor, or Deputy Governor to serve more than eight years in total.

Aiyedatiwa had first assumed office on December 27, 2024, to complete the tenure of the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu. 

He was sworn in again on February 24, 2025, after defeating Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Hon Agboola Ajayi in the November 16, 2024 election.

The court action was brought by APC member Dr. Akin Egbuwalo, who questioned the eligibility of Aiyedatiwa and his deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, as well as the ruling party’s role in the election.

Justice Adegoke emphasized that respecting constitutional term limits is essential to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.

The ruling has sent shockwaves through Ondo State politics and could significantly influence the strategies of political parties ahead of the 2026 gubernatorial elections. 

Neither Governor Aiyedatiwa nor the APC has issued an official response.
