No fewer than 23 residents have died after a series of suspected suicide bomb attacks struck several locations in Borno State, leaving more than a hundred others injured and triggering a major emergency response by security agencies.
Police authorities said the coordinated explosions were carried out by suspected suicide bombers, resulting in widespread panic and casualties across the affected areas.
Preliminary figures released by the police indicated that 108 individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at different medical facilities.
Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency and the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, were mobilised shortly after the incidents.
Victims were evacuated from the blast scenes and transported to hospitals for urgent medical care.
Moreover, security forces, comprising police tactical units, military personnel, and other joint security operatives, were deployed immediately after the attacks.
The teams secured and cordoned off the affected locations while bomb disposal specialists from the police Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit conducted thorough sweep operations to ensure no additional explosive devices remained in the vicinity.
The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Naziru Abdulmajid, subsequently visited the blast scenes to assess the situation and review ongoing emergency operations.
He sympathised with families who lost relatives in the attacks and assured residents that security agencies remain committed to protecting lives and property.
According to the police command, calm has since returned to the affected areas.
However, security patrols and surveillance have been intensified across Maiduguri and surrounding communities to prevent further incidents.
The explosions occurred at three busy locations within the city: the Maiduguri Monday Market, the main entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover in Maiduguri.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Kenneth Daso, the incidents were confirmed to have happened at about 7:24 p.m. on March 16, 2026.
Furthermore, Daso said investigations have commenced to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attacks and to identify those responsible.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or objects to the nearest security agency.
Police authorities also released emergency contact lines to assist members of the public seeking information or help in connection with the incident.
