Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has insisted that his open support for President Bola Tinubu does not amount to anti-party conduct, despite his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Fayose stated this on Sunday while speaking at the PDP national convention held in Abuja, where he stressed the need to prioritise national interest above partisan considerations.
According to him, political alignment should not override what he described as the collective good of the country, noting that differing opinions are a natural part of democratic practice.
“Nigeria belongs to all of us. Before anything else, you are first from your state before becoming a party member,” he said, adding that political leaders in Ekiti remain united in their support for the current administration in the state.
The former governor also drew parallels with global political practices, arguing that disagreements across party lines are not unusual in established democracies.
Citing the United States as an example, Fayose noted that political actors often take independent positions on national matters without facing sanctions from their parties.
He maintained that competence should take precedence over party affiliation when assessing candidates for leadership positions.
Fayose questioned the rationale behind supporting individuals solely on the basis of party membership, even when, according to him, such individuals may lack the required capacity.
In making his point, he referenced Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, while comparing leadership qualities, suggesting that performance and ability should guide political support rather than sentiment.
His comments come amid ongoing debates within the PDP over party discipline and loyalty, especially as the country gradually moves towards the next election cycle.
