Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and ex-governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party and defected to the African Democratic Congress, citing persistent internal conflicts within the opposition party.
Tambuwal announced his departure in a statement posted on the social media platform X early Thursday, saying he had formally notified his ward chairman of his resignation before joining the ADC with his supporters and political associates.
According to him, the decision followed extensive consultations and careful reflection on the state of the party.
He said the ongoing leadership disputes, internal disagreements and deepening divisions within the PDP had made it increasingly difficult for him to remain in the party.
Tambuwal acknowledged the significant role the PDP played in his political journey, which saw him emerge as Speaker of the House of Representatives and later serve two terms as governor of Sokoto State.
However, he noted that the prolonged crisis within the party had weakened its cohesion and direction, leaving him with little option but to seek a new political platform.
Explaining his choice of the ADC, Tambuwal said he believed the party offered a stronger and more credible platform capable of advancing democratic values and national development.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to promoting democratic ideals, justice and unity in Nigeria.
Tambuwal’s move comes amid a wave of high-profile defections to the ADC, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi, a development that is gradually positioning the party as a notable opposition force ahead of the next electoral cycle.
