Edun Breaks Silence After Exit From Tinubu’s Cabinet, Defends Reforms

 

Former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has broken his silence following his exit from the Federal Executive Council, defending the economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu and pointing to what he described as measurable improvements in key indicators.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Edun expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve, describing his time in office as both challenging and impactful.

He said it was an honour to play a role in shaping and implementing policies at a critical period in Nigeria’s economic trajectory, having served in multiple capacities from the beginning of the administration.

Reflecting on his tenure, the former minister maintained that the government inherited a fragile economy but succeeded in stabilising it through coordinated reforms.

According to him, economic growth improved from about two per cent to over four per cent, while inflation dropped from 35 per cent to 15 per cent during the period under review.

“These outcomes were achieved through deliberate efforts to restore macroeconomic stability, strengthen fiscal discipline, and boost investor confidence,” Edun stated.

He noted that the reforms were driven by collaboration across different levels of government and support from private sector stakeholders, which helped to reposition the economy.

Edun added that while the reform process remains ongoing, the administration has succeeded in laying a solid foundation for sustainable and inclusive growth.

“I am proud of what we achieved alongside colleagues in the Federal Executive Council, state governors, and our partners in both the public and private sectors,” he said.

The former minister also expressed optimism about Nigeria’s economic future, stressing that the direction of policy implementation remains clear despite existing challenges.

He wished his successor, Taiwo Oyedele, success in advancing the country’s economic agenda, while pledging continued support for national development.

Edun further reiterated his commitment to serving the country and backing the administration’s efforts beyond his time in office.
