Nigeria’s Federal Government has approved an upward review of allowances and introduced new welfare measures for civil servants in a move aimed at strengthening staff motivation and improving working conditions across the public service.
The decision forms part of broader reforms designed to enhance productivity in government institutions while responding to the rising cost of living affecting workers in the country.
Officials explained that the new package includes a review of several allowances paid to civil servants, alongside additional welfare initiatives intended to support workers during service and after retirement.
Moreover, the government has approved the payment of 100 per cent Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) for civil servants attending official training programmes, even when such programmes are held within their duty stations.
The measure is expected to encourage participation in professional development programmes without financial disadvantages to the employees.
Authorities also confirmed that other entitlements, including estacode and related allowances, have been adjusted upward to reflect prevailing economic realities and the need to improve staff welfare.
Furthermore, a new retirement benefit structure has been introduced to strengthen financial security for workers leaving service.
Under the arrangement, retiring civil servants will be entitled to a gratuity equivalent to their full annual total emolument, in addition to pension benefits under the contributory pension scheme.
Officials said the reform is intended to ensure that public servants who dedicate years of service to the country receive more substantial support at retirement.
In addition, the government has introduced a housing support initiative aimed at helping civil servants acquire homes.
The programme includes a ₦10 billion housing loan scheme, which will provide affordable financing options for eligible workers through designated government-backed financial institutions.
Government sources noted that the welfare reforms also extend to compensation for employees who suffer injuries, disabilities or death while performing official duties.
According to officials, the compensation framework is designed to provide financial protection for affected workers and their families.
Speaking on the initiative, government representatives said the reforms reflect the administration’s commitment to improving the well-being of civil servants and strengthening the efficiency of the federal public service.
They added that improving worker welfare remains essential for building a motivated workforce capable of delivering effective public services to Nigerians.
