The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, has dismissed speculations of a rift between him and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, as well as the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, insisting that his relationships with both leaders remain cordial.
The first class monarch, while speaking with newsmen in Oyo town, maintained that there was no misunderstanding between him and the state government, noting that any issue, if it ever arises, would be resolved through private engagement.
“I have nothing against the government. The governor has been very nice. If there is anything, I will meet him one-on-one,” he said.
Oba Owoade also refuted claims of strained relations with the Olubadan, stressing that both traditional rulers continue to maintain mutual respect and understanding.
“My relationship with the Olubadan is cordial. There is no misunderstanding,” he stated.
The monarch attributed the spread of such rumours to bloggers and individuals seeking attention, observing that prominent traditional institutions are often targets of misinformation and unfounded narratives.
Addressing concerns over his recent absence at public functions, the Alaafin explained that he had been battling ill health but is now on the path to recovery and would soon resume full participation in public engagements.
“I have been indisposed for some time, but I am recovering and will soon return fully to public engagements,” he said.
Clarifying a recent incident that further fuelled speculation, Oba Owoade explained that a perceived snub involving a handshake with the Olubadan was unintentional and had since been resolved amicably.
“I extended my hand to him, but he later explained that he did not see it. I don’t see it as an offence. We later spoke and met again. There is no issue,” he added.
The monarch expressed appreciation to the media for its continued support, describing journalists as critical partners in progress and nation-building.
Looking ahead, Oba Owoade disclosed that preparations are underway for his birthday celebration slated for July 18, during which three individuals would be conferred with chieftaincy titles.
On development initiatives within the Oyo Kingdom, the Alaafin revealed that a land committee has been constituted to address disputes, while plans are ongoing for the construction of a civic centre and the renovation of the palace.
He reaffirmed his commitment to peace, unity, and development, urging residents to disregard unfounded rumours and continue to support traditional institutions in their efforts to foster stability and growth.
