Tinubu Nominates Joseph Tegbe As New Power Minister

 

In a decisive move to accelerate reforms in Nigeria’s electricity industry, President Bola Tinubu has named Mr. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as the Minister-designate for Power.

The nomination, sent to the Senate for prompt screening and confirmation, fills the vacancy created by the exit of Adebayo Adelabu. 

 

The former minister resigned to focus on his bid for the Oyo State governorship in the 2027 elections.

Tegbe, an Oyo State native, brings over three and a half decades of high-level experience in economic policy, institutional restructuring, and strategic advisory work. 

He is widely respected for his deep understanding of fiscal reforms and governance systems honed during his distinguished career.

Before his current international role, Tegbe served as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa. 

There, he guided major government and corporate clients through complex policy changes, regulatory improvements, and large-scale investment projects.

He currently heads the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership as Director General and Global Liaison Officer. 

In this capacity, he coordinates bilateral initiatives aimed at boosting infrastructure development, economic cooperation, and mutually beneficial projects between the two nations.

Analysts highlight Tegbe’s direct exposure to the power sector as a major advantage. 

His past assignments involved critical work on regulatory frameworks and institutional strengthening with key agencies, including the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET).

A senior government source familiar with the nomination remarked, “This appointment signals the President’s determination to bring proven reformers into critical sectors. 

Tegbe’s track record in turning around complex systems makes him the right fit at this pivotal time.”

The presidency expects the incoming minister to hit the ground running once confirmed. His mandate will centre on improving grid reliability, resolving lingering sector challenges, and unlocking sustainable private investment to expand electricity access nationwide.

This latest appointment forms part of broader efforts under the Renewed Hope Agenda to deliver reliable power supply, a foundation many believe is essential for Nigeria’s industrial revival and economic transformation.

The Senate is anticipated to begin the confirmation process soon in line with constitutional provisions.

Tegbe’s nomination has already sparked positive reactions among stakeholders who see it as a strategic step toward achieving stable and efficient electricity delivery for millions of Nigerians.
