The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on behalf of the Federal Government.
The statement, signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, described June 12 as a landmark date in Nigeria’s democratic history, symbolising the sacrifices and determination of citizens who fought for democratic governance.
According to the ministry, the occasion serves as a reminder of the resilience and patriotism demonstrated by Nigerians in advancing the nation’s democratic journey.
The government noted that the contributions of pro-democracy advocates and other national heroes continue to shape the country’s democratic values and institutions.
Tunji-Ojo also reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening democracy through adherence to the rule of law, accountability, transparency and inclusive governance.
He urged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the nation’s democratic progress and renew their commitment to national unity and development.
Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 in honour of the struggle for democratic rule and the ideals of freedom, justice and good governance.
