Heavy Windstorm, Rain Kill Grandmother, Granddaughter in Bauchi

A rainstorm has claimed the lives of a woman and her granddaughter while destroying several houses and other property in Bara community, Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The victims, identified as 50-year-old Aisha Sagir and her four-year-old granddaughter, Aisha Shuaibu, reportedly died after a heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds ravaged the community on Tuesday.

The disaster also left a trail of destruction across the area, with many houses damaged, livestock killed and property worth millions of naira destroyed.

Confirming the incident, the Bauchi State Police Command said preliminary assessments indicated that the storm caused significant damage in parts of the community.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, said the tragedy followed an intense rainfall and windstorm that affected several settlements, leaving many residents counting their losses.

He said, “The incident has brought immense grief to the affected families and the wider community. Authorities are assessing the full scale of the damage while ensuring that normalcy is maintained in the area.”

Habib added that officers from the Kirfi Divisional Police Headquarters were deployed to the affected community shortly after the incident to assess the situation, support response efforts and maintain security.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, sympathised with the bereaved families and affected residents, assuring that the command would continue collaborating with relevant agencies to support victims. He also urged residents to remain vigilant during heavy rainfall and promptly report emergencies to security and rescue agencies.
