The incident, which briefly disrupted the event, occurred while top government officials and party stakeholders were seated on the platform during the inauguration of Imole canvassers for the Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency.
Among those reportedly on the podium when it gave way were the Deputy Governor, Kola Adewusi; Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun; and spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council, Pelumi Olajengbesi.
A video of the incident showed guests seated on the structure as proceedings continued. The collapse occurred shortly after a musical performance and as the event compere was preparing to introduce the next segment of the programme.
An eyewitness, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, said the incident caused temporary panic among attendees and halted activities momentarily.
According to the source, security personnel swiftly evacuated those trapped in the debris before organisers restored order and resumed the programme.
“The governor and several members of his cabinet were seated on the section of the podium that collapsed. Fortunately, nobody was injured. After the situation was brought under control, the event continued and the governor later addressed the gathering,” the source said.
Reacting to the development, the Deputy Spokesperson to the Governor, Oladele Bamiji, downplayed concerns over the incident, insisting that no one sustained injuries.
He said, “The programme continued smoothly with the governor and other government officials in attendance. There were no casualties or injuries.
“If the incident had resulted in any serious harm, the event would not have continued. The governor subsequently attended another engagement in Odo-Otin Local Government Area.”
