Rojas was sentenced on Wednesday after pleading guilty to charges arising from an incident involving 37-year-old Jorge Gonzalez, who died after losing consciousness on an R train in April 2025.
According to reports, investigators relied on surveillance footage which allegedly showed Rojas approaching the victim after discovering that he was unresponsive.

Court documents also indicated that the convict searched through the deceased's pockets during the incident.

Authorities said Rojas, a resident of Brooklyn, surrendered to law enforcement officers several weeks later after identifying himself in surveillance images released during the investigation.

He reportedly denied involvement in the offence when initially questioned by investigators.

In addition to the prison term, the court ordered that Rojas be placed under supervised release for 15 years upon completion of his sentence.

Reports further indicated that immigration authorities identified him as a Mexican national who had previously attempted to enter the United States unlawfully on several occasions.

The victim, Gonzalez, was said to have lived in the United States for nearly two decades, undertaking various jobs to support family members in Mexico.

Reacting to the sentencing, relatives described Gonzalez as a devoted father and hardworking individual who worked in construction, hospitality and other sectors to provide for his loved ones.

The case drew widespread public attention across the United States due to the nature of the crime and renewed concerns over safety and monitoring within New York City's public transportation system.
