Olodo Uprising: I Don’t Have A University Degree — YCee

Rapper Oludemilade Alejo, popularly known as YCee, has responded to criticism over his comments on the “Olodo Uprising” debate, saying many people misunderstood his message and wrongly assumed he was speaking from a position of academic superiority.

Speaking during an interview, the 33-year-old said he was concerned about what he described as society’s growing obsession with money and how it has affected people’s values.

“I hate what the pursuit of money has done to us as a society. There are societies that are worse of than Nigeria. War-torn societies where people do not behave as badly as Nigerians. And the excuse is always so long as you make money.History

“The whole Olodo Uprising frenzy, I didn’t coin the phrase. I feel a lot of people missed my point and are trying to make it seem as though I was classist of elitist because I have some level of education.

“Mind you I just have my school cert o. I don’t have a university degree. It got to some point in SS2 when I couldn’t read anymore, I was like I’m done. I had wanted to study computer science, but I couldn’t meet the cut off to study in UNILAG but now they’ve reduced cut off maybe if I had written now I’d have gotten computer science,” he stated.

YCee said his educational background does not support the claim that he was looking down on people without higher education. He maintained that his comments were aimed at addressing societal values rather than attacking people based on their level of education.

The controversy began in June after YCee, during an appearance on the Afropolitan Podcast, criticised what he called an “Olodo Uprising.” He argued that Nigerian society was increasingly celebrating ignorance and internet virality over education and intellectual achievement. He also referred to what he described as “Peller culture,” a remark that sparked widespread debate on social media.

His comments drew responses from content creator Peller, who accused the rapper of disrespecting him, while several celebrities and social media users also joined the conversation. The debate later expanded into a broader discussion about the value of education, social media influence and success in Nigeria.
